History

The Church of St. Mark in Tašmajdan was built from 1931 to 1940, near the old church from 1835, according to the plans of architects Petar and Branko Krstić.

The church houses one of the richest collections of Serbian icons from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The continuity of the Christian church on the site of today’s Tašmajdan Park has existed since at least the 19th century.

In the southern part of the nave is the sarcophagus with the remains of Emperor Dušan.

In the crypt of the church are the graves of King Alexander Obrenović and Draga Mašin, his wife.

In the northern part is the sarcophagus with the remains of Patriarch German.
